THE LAST OF THE RUBBER TAPPERS?
In 2008, Pak Man (not his real name), a rubber tapper from Kedah was earning MYR4000 a month—a comfortable living. Today, he earns five times less—MYR800 a month.
The sole breadwinner for a family of nine children, Pak Man is struggling to eke out a living on his 3-acre lot of rubber. On a good day, he can get up to 40 kilos of latex; nowadays in the dry season of January to April, he averages about 15 kilos.
In 2008, a kilo of latex was sold for about MYR7, depending on world rubber prices. Today, Pak Man is selling at MYR1.80 per kilo, almost four times less. Responding to global markets, the price of rubber is volatile—causing large fluctuations in Pak Man’s income.
At the same time, Pak Man says that costs have gone up by more than 50%, in part due to GST. Maintaining rubber trees is no easy task—each of the 700 trees on the lot must have pesticide applied, fertilized, and treated if there are termites. Below is a comparison of prices from 2013 to 2018:

As he explains the rising costs one by one, Pak Man sounds increasingly resigned.
“My costs have gone up while my income has gone down. I have to work on others’ rubber estates to earn money on the side.”
For those who don’t know, rubber tapping is very labour intensive, requiring Pak Man to start tapping at 7am till 12pm. Paddy farming is quite different. There are generally two harvests a year—in between which farmers are able to take on other odd jobs.
Even government subsidies have dwindled. 5 years ago, the authorities would provide 24 bags of free fertilizer per year; now, only 19 bags are parcelled out.
Furthermore, those who register late are disqualified from receiving aid.
“Life as a rubber tapper is one of uncertainty. Rubber prices can be very volatile—some months we can live comfortably, other times our entire family of 10 has to share one ‘ikan kembung’ (mackerel) for dinner.”
While this year, it was announced that rubber tappers would be given a one-off incentive of MYR600, for Pak Man, it’s too little too late.
“What can I do with that money? It’s not a sustainable solution.”
“The government should step in and do something for us rubber tappers. This issue has been brought to Parliament so many times already—and still, no action.”
“Uneducated people like myself…that’s why we pay taxes so government officers can help us. What have they done for us?”
Despite his self-effacing talk, Pak Man is extremely well-informed. He’s aware of the movement of global commodity prices, government manifestos for the industry, and of the potential of downstream rubber products.
“We could be so much more. I remember reading former Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi’s plan for Malaysia’s rubber industry. More factories, diversification of products, transforming our tappers to more than just raw material providers.”
Pak Man may be the last generation of rubber tappers in Malaysia. At 60-years-old, he is wondering what will happen to his land, passed down from his father and before him his grandfather.
“One day, there will be all these tall and straight rubber trees planted in orderly lines, and not a soul around them.”

Many people have never question why Najib and Rosmah did not run when the result came in between 7pm - 12 midnight, that Barisan Nasional has lost.
The bulk of stolen wealth has already been flown out months before GE14 was called. The mansion in Samui is almost completed. Houses in Australia and other countries were ready to welcome them.

My karma will be greater.
As a Muslim woman there is no justice in Malaysia version of Islam when a wrong cannot be corrected.
What happened to me, should never be repeated to any mother in the world.
One sacrifice so much to bring a life to this world and in return got rejected, mocked, shamed and disrespected in public by the same life.
Some said my daughter Arniza got charmed by bomoh, jampi etc.
To those who knows Arniza, do look at her eyes when you talk to her.
If she avoids contact means she is indeed caught in the black magic circle that is practice among the kampung folks.
My ex husband, Lukman and his family are supporters of Bomoh.
So am I surprise if somethings were done to my daughter Arniza?
Not at all.
What Lukman has done is typical of the Malays. It is the environment and parenting that made them like that.

As a mother without guidance I brought the children up to the best of my ability. My priority has always been to ensure the family eat together, sleep together, play together, cry together, suffer together etc.
Religion and race were never brought into our lives. Everyone has their share of weakness and strength.
Even when my ex husband's family members insulted me regarding the manner I brought up the children, why I do not pray in front of them etc, I never answered back due to my respect for them as my eldest.
When my ex husband insisted that Hari Raya is to be spent with his family members and relatives, I never once objected. After the death of my ex husband's mother I did suggest few times it is best we have our own family celebration inviting friends over. My ex husband ignore the suggestion.
When men proposed marriage to my eldest daughter, my ex husband is ever ready to take up the offer without checking the background of each candidate.
My daughter Arniza is easily influence by people who can manja her. This is due to lack of love from her own father. My ex husband is typical Melayu, big ego with no substance. To my ex husband, his duty is only face value as a father and husband. He does not care whether they study or not, whether there is food on the table, whether bills are paid, when asked to help around the house or do minor repairs everything can wait and wait. Even when the children and I are sick, never once was there any concern shown by my ex husband.
In my home I have the duty of being a Father, Provider, Nagger and Mother.
This is why my daughter Arniza can mock and show disrespect for me after my divorce.
In Australia, when Arniza was doing her Master she was contacted by our Jakim whereby they slowly brain washed her about Islam. Then when she went for BTN, that spell the end of an open minded woman.
To Arniza, her mother no longer play a role in her life. Everything that the family used to do is now sinful and haram.
I have right from the beginning wanted certain conditions to be met before her marriage. As a Muslim and a mother I felt she had to have an Insurance to fall back for the future as a woman does not have rights after marriage in Islam.
Like any mother I love to have an extended family living in the same house.
During my time as a Mother I have tried to show the importance of being a family first and everything else second.
One batang wants to destroy the family. The middle believe she must obey the two batangs. The second batang wants what he cannot have.
TODAY THE DAUGHTER I GAVE BIRTH TO AND BROUGHT UP NO LONGER EXIST IN MY LIFE.
TO THIS, I END MY DUTY AS A MOTHER TO DR ARNIZA KHAIRANI.
I WILL NOT COME FOR YOUR FUNERAL, NEITHER SHOULD YOU COME TO MINE. LET US HAVE A CLEAN CUT.
