Typhoid fever is caused by infection with a bacterium known as Salmonella Typhi. The infection causes high fever, diarrhea, and sometimes a rash that causes flat red spots on the skin.Overview
Typhoid fever is the name given to the illness caused by the bacteriumSalmonella Typhi, a member of the Salmonella family. Typhoid fever is spread through food and water contaminated by animal and human feces. Typhoid fever is very rare in the United States and other developed nations, and it is more common in underdeveloped nations, particularly Latin America, Asia, and Africa. When traveling to underdeveloped areas, a good way to remember what foods and beverages are safe is to think of the following: If you cannot boil it (to kill bacteria), peel it (to remove bacteria) or cook it (to kill bacteria), do not eat it. When traveling to areas without clean drinking water, also remember to avoid ice cubes, which may be made with contaminated water, and to check the seal on all bottled water that you purchase (as the water bottle may have been refilled with unclean water). Some travelers drink only carbonated water in order to avoid this issue.

The longer typhoid fever symptoms go untreated, the higher the risk of complications, including the spread of the bacteria to the blood (sepsis) and death.
Who's At Risk
Anyone who comes into contact with contaminated food or water is at risk of developing typhoid fever; the very young, very old, and those who are immunocompromised are at much greater risk of developing more severe disease.
Signs and Symptoms
The distinguishing characteristics of typhoid fever illness are high fever (temperature as high as 40°C [104°F]), feeling generally weak and achy (malaise), headache, loss of appetite, rash, and sometimes diarrhea or constipation. These symptoms usually begin within hours to days of ingesting the contaminated substance and may go away on their own within a week but, if left untreated, may last for weeks.

Symptoms of typhoid fever are as follows:
  • High fever (temperature of 38–40°C [102–104°F])
  • Malaise (achiness and weakness)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Change in stool output, such as constipation or diarrhea
  • Rarely, a flat (not raised) rash of dark pink spots

So Najis is saved from the axe.
For how long.
Do consider the possibility of the Jinx to live through to GE14 and then what?
What is not done should have been done.
SO BOMOH AND MONEY ARE THE STRONGEST WEAPON IN PARLIAMENT.
Some people said it is better to have the jinx than to have an incest abuser as Premier or a Malay First as Premier.
Me think it is better to set an example of the evil in front than the one that is going to takeover.
Whatever Najis is doing now must be STOP AT ALL COST.
IF YOU ALLOW NAJIS AND ROSMAH TO CONTINUE ROBBING AND KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE THEN WHOEVER TAKES OVER FROM THEM WILL DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD.
BY JAILING AND WHIPPING NAJIS AND ROSMAH OR GIVING THEM THE DEATH PENALTY THAT WILL BE THE BEST SETTING FOR WHOEVER TAKES OVER TO THINK A BILLION TIMES BEFORE DOING THE SAME.
FUNNY THAT THE AGONG HAS SUDDENLY TAKEN ILL.
SINCE THE QUEEN AND FLOM ARE SISTERS THIS IS TOO OBVIOUS.

Is there no Malaysian capable of being the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Today we are in a dilemma because every single one in the Cabinet are corrupted, abuser or murderer.
Do we have to suffer because of the corrupted system or do we take a stand and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Today if Najis and Rosmah are not punished there is no future for Malaysia.
That is a fact and it is very real.
When a country has no law and system in place where a corrupted leader cannot be punish or force to leave office WE ARE RULE BY A DICTATOR FOREVER.
IN TIME TO COME WE WILL TURN INTO ANOTHER ISIS NATION.
WHERE BLOOD WILL BE SHED AND THE FIRST VICTIM WOULD BE THE CHINESE.
THEN THE INDIANS AND SOON THE MALAYS THEMSELVES.
BY THEN NOTHING CAN BE DONE AND WE WILL BECOME REFUGEES RUNNING TO OTHER COUNTRIES TO SURVIVE.

Suharto: 'One of the greatest mass murderers of the 20th century'

When General Suharto came to power in 1965 he overthrew the grandfather of journalist Chris Kline, who explains here why he will not mourn the death of Indonesia's dictator.

When I was five or six, the Indonesian dictator Suharto, who died last week, came to Rome for a state visit. My Indonesian mother and I were summoned to the embassy to pay homage.
But when it came time for photographs, and Suharto picked me up, I shouted for him to put me down, and began punching him while he awkwardly kept smiling. I called out that he was a “uomo cattivo”, a bad man. Millions of Indonesians who thought the same would never have dared to say so aloud.
Why did Suharto permit this? Because I am the American grandson of the founder of modern Indonesia, Sukarno. General Suharto (both men, like many Indonesians, are known by only one name) overthrew him in a blood-soaked coup in 1965, covertly aided and enthusiastically abetted by the US, Britain and Australia.
I was just two when Suharto unleashed his “New Order”, living in Europe with my American father, Frank Latimore, and my Indonesian mother, Rukmini Sukarno. He was a Hollywood and Broadway actor, she was a European opera diva. We were far from Indonesia, home to a fifth of the world’s natural resources, which my grandfather led to independence after a long liberation struggle against colonial rule by the Netherlands. But we were not free from Suharto’s dictatorship.
Much of my family that hadn’t been purged after the coup remained in Indonesia, where Suharto held them hostage. Some in the family changed sides willingly, but for the sake of “national unity”, and out of fear of retaliation, the rest of us had to play along, even if we lived in exile. It was particularly loathsome for my mother, haunted all her life by the fate of her cousin, Brigadier General Sabur, who was slowly hacked to death in one of Suharto’s dungeons.
So I will not mourn Suharto. His death is some small measure of justice, far too late, for all those he killed during nearly 32 years as the absolute dictator of the world’s fourth most populous nation, and largest Muslim country. And until he fell in 1998, Suharto enjoyed Western support.
Sukarno, a fiery nationalist, was one of the key architects of the Non-Aligned Movement. The Cold War was at its height, the US was escalating its role in Vietnam, and the “domino theory” held sway. Indonesia’s Communist Party, the PKI, then the third largest in the world, openly declared it would arm itself as a rival force to the Indonesian military. Sukarno, rightly or wrongly, was regarded as a crypto-Marxist who would empower the PKI further. He told America and Britain to “go to hell”; clearly his days were numbered.
The military and intelligence attachés in the US and British embassies were sending helpful death lists to the Indonesian high command when Suharto struck. In the midst of the mass executions, the British ambassador, Sir Andrew Gilchrist, sent a chilling telegram to London, saying: “I have never concealed from you my belief that a little shooting in Indonesia would be an essential preliminary to effective change.”
Time magazine described the horrors Gilchrist so calmly endorsed: “The killings have been on such a scale the disposal of corpses has created a serious sanitation problem in east Java and northern Sumatra, where the humid air bears the reek of decaying flesh. Travellers from those areas tell of small rivers and streams that have been literally clogged with bodies.” At least 500,000 Indonesians died violently in the months following the takeover, but studies suggest the figure might have been between a million and two million.
A decade later, again with a green light from Washington, London and Canberra, as many as 230,000 more people, or a third of the civilian population of East Timor, died when Suharto invaded the former Portuguese colony. Australia monitored busy Indonesian military radio traffic in the build-up, but said nothing. As Suharto’s marines and paratroopers conquered the territory, a satisfied CIA internal communiqué stated: “Without continued heavy US logistical, military support the Indonesians might not have been able to pull it off.”
The man who has just died in Jakarta is one of the greatest mass murderers of the 20th century, but he was never indicted by the International War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague. Throughout, Suharto received all the weaponry his brutal military wanted. Britain sold him Scorpion armoured vehicles and Spartan troop carriers after a “thorough assessment” that they would not be used for “internal repression”, according to the then Defence Secretary, Michael Heseltine. Curious, then, how they turned up on the streets to hold back angry crowds demanding change.
Suharto’s advocates claim he modernised Indonesia and returned the country to the community of nations. Indonesia is now praised as the third-largest democracy on the planet, which has resisted Islamist radicalisation. But what of the estimated $15bn to $30bn Suharto plundered, while 49 million of his people survive on less than $2 a day, deprived of primary education and basic medical care? If Indonesia has moved forward at all, it is despite Suharto, not because of him.
I have visited many countries as a foreign correspondent for CNN and Fox, but all my life I have been excluded from Indonesia, because of Suharto. Now that he is gone, I will be able to embrace my own heritage at last. And the man who overthrew my grandfather will take his place beside Pol Pot, Pinochet, Milosevic, Stalin, Idi Amin, Mao and all the other great murderers of their own people.

UMNO ELEPHANTS FIGHT, MALAYSIA GETS TRAMPLED: IT'S NOW ZAHID VS MUHYIDDIN VS NAJIB, OPPOSITION KNOCKED OUT!

Written by Malaysia Chronicle
UMNO ELEPHANTS FIGHT, MALAYSIA GETS TRAMPLED: IT'S NOW ZAHID VS MUHYIDDIN VS NAJIB, OPPOSITION KNOCKED OUT!

KUALA LUMPUR - Embattled Prime Minister Najib Razak's much-watched Budget 2016 speech has been delivered and duly snubbed. It looks like there's nothing the 62-year-old leader can do right in the eyes of the Malaysian people and even in his own Umno party.

Just a day after the Budget's unveiling, hailed by Najib's supporters as a lifeline to his flagging political fortunes and criticized as unabashed financial manipulation that will further erode Malaysia's fast-sinking economy, 13 branch leaders from his ruling Umno party called for his resignation.

For speaking their minds, Najib's coterie of sycophants have rushed to demand that the group of 13 be sacked from Umno - a move that is bound to intensify the open rebellion now visible across a large spectrum of party ranks.

Such outspokenness against the Umno president is rare but not unprecedented. In fact, the call brings a sense of deja-vu harking back to Najib's own move to bring down his former boss, Abdullah Badawi, who quit as Malaysia's 5th prime minister in 2009 when faced with the prospect of an embarrassing defeat at the Umno polls.

Three 'minefields' are on the horizon for Najib to navigate - each with the potential to send him out from office in disgrace and possibly straight to jail, where his arch foe and former Opposition chief Anwar Ibrahim languishes on sodomy charges purportedly trumped-up by Najib himself. Poetic justice or karma, time will tell.

The first 2 events will take place in Parliament - a vote on Budget 2016 and a no-confidence motion against Najib. If both fail, many believe Najib's critics in Umno will bring a no-confidence vote against him at the party's annual general assembly in December.

If Muhyiddin was Najib's kingmaker, Zahid may be Najib's political undertaker

Oddly, Najib's most dangerous foes are not members of the Opposition but come from within Umno. They are former premier Mahathir Mohamad; Muhyiddin Yassin - the former deputy premier whom Najib sacked when the 1MDB financial scandal threatened to unravel; and Tengku Razaleigh - the Kelantan prince with access to the powerful Malay rulers who recently censured Najib for the rise in racial tensions and corruption in the country.

But with 'trump cards' fast depleting, Najib's biggest threat may actually be none other than Zahid Hamidi, the Umno 'warlord' or power-broker whom he appointed to replace Muhyiddin in June.

Zahid is a force to be reckoned, not only because of his popularity in Umno, but also because he holds the powerful Home Ministry portfolio, which controls the police, Immigration and the media.

"Najib had no choice but to make Zahid DPM as well as let him retain the Home Ministry because he needed Zahid's support in Umno and above that, he wanted to pit Zahid against Muhyiddin," a political source told Malaysia Chronicle.

"The object is to make Muhyiddin (who is the Umno deputy president) fight off Zahid (who is one of three elected vice presidents) for the PM's chair. Both Zahid and Muhyiddin have their own support bases and a stalemate between the two will help Najib to prolong his own time as PM."

According to the political grapevine, Muhyiddin has not agreed to give up his 'stake' on the Umno presidency, and hence the PM's seat, should Najib be ousted either in Parliament or at Umno.

"Umno people are saying Zahid wants Muhyiddin to step down as the Umno deputy president first before he will support any move to bring down Najib. And the numbers Zahid can bring are crucial. This is why Zahid is sounding out threats to arrest Dr M, who has publicly said the successor should be Muhyiddin. It's to send a message - no deal unless I get to be PM," said the source.

According to the source, the dynamics of this power equation is what is keeping Najib in power. Najib's support has been corroded badly but as long as he can play off the Zahid-Muhyiddin stalemate and hang on until the next general election, he still has the chance to outsmart the other two.

"To those outside Umno, this is unbelievable because Najib and the 1MDB scandal are so harmful to the country's image and economy. But in Umno, these guys only care about their own positions. Malaysia can go to the dogs, become a failed state for all they care," said the source.

Don't be nostalgic

It is telling that Zahid has come out, guns a-blazing a day after Muhyiddin told a public forum how he had given way to Najib, who was then the deputy Umno president, to take over from Badawi even though Mahathir has asked him to be PM in 2009.

“I respect what he is saying, and his feelings (but) we need not be nostalgic over things that did not become reality,” Malaysiakini reported Zahid as saying.

Muhyiddin had recounted, "I met Dr Mahathir and he asked me to go for the presidency. But I said no, I can't, I am only party vice president, and Najib is the deputy president, so he should go for it."

Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang has warned that Umno 'battle royale' might be the tipping point for Malaysia - once regarded admired for its high growth economy and stable politics.

"The battle between Najib's 300 UMNO chieftains and the three million UMNO members will be a major factor to determine the fate of Malaysia, whether Malaysia will hurtle headlong to become a rogue and failed state because of breakdown of rule of law, rampant corruption and abuses of power, and the collapse of good governance or whether Malaysia can pick herself up, re-strategise and reunite to strike forward to fulfill our national potential when we were on verge of becoming one of the Asian tigers before the 1997 financial crisis," DAP adviser Kit Siang said in a statement.  - Malaysia Chronicle

Every Muslim who HAS ever handled TNT, Nitro, Bullets, High Explosive Bombs, Rocket Launchers or Been Treated for Cuts injury REQUIRING stitches, or taken Antibiotics, or Vitamin Capsules, HAS Been Contaminated with Pig Products.

Pig bone gelatin is USED to help transport Gunpowder or Cordite into the bullets.
The ironical part is that when a Suicide Bomber blows himself up, his body parts Are impregnated
with Gelatin & Glycerine from the Explosive. Both Gelatine & Glycerine are manufactured from Pigs
worldwide .. ergo, They Will BE Unacceptable by Allah.

Some Makers of cigarettes use Haemoglobin from pig's blood in their Filters.  This element works as
a sort of 'artificial Lung' in the cigarette so, they claim: 'Harmful Reactions Take place before the
Chemicals reaches the user', (enters the Pig.)

Insulin, the blood thinning drug Heparin & pig heart Valves are all pig-based.
The complex workings of the global food & processing Industry have ensured that it IS impossible
to Avoid pig altogether.

Pig product goes into Licorice & many other products .. in this process, collagen IS taken from the pig
& IS then Converted into gelatin. This finds its way into numerous foodstuffs, where it acts as a gelling agent.

A number of medicines ALSO contain pig gelatine -.
Everything from painkillers to multivitamins fatty acids extracted from the bone fat of pigs, are used in shampoos & conditioners to give them their shiny, pearl-like appearance. These acids are also
found in  numerous body lotions, foundations & anti-wrinkle creams.
Glycerine made from pork fat IS an Ingredient in many Types of Toothpaste.

There IS no legal obligation for Manufacturers to Specify whether the gelatine they use IS from a pig.
Even when Specified, it IS often Confusingly Referred to as Suilline gelatine.

So to all prospective Suicide Bombers, ISIS and innocent, good Muslims...
"Do have a Nice Day" from "Percy" the wonderful Pig.

Half Million Dollar Denial! - Najib's Latest 1MDB Denial Is Directed Against Obama's Key Aide

29 OCT 2015

Frank White – DuSable’s Capital Management CEO and Obama’s chief political fundraiser was 1MDB’s latest JV partner
Frank White Jr– DuSable’s Capital Management CEO and Obama’s chief political fundraiser was 1MDB’s latest JV partner
With the US President Barack Obama due to make a supposedly image-boosting visit to Malaysia next month, yet another embarrassing denial has come out from the Prime Minister over 1MDB.
This time Najib Razak has directed his denial against the testimony of a key aide of Obama himself, his chief fundraiser, the businessman Frank White Jr of DuSable Capital Management.
Our research shows that White registered a half million dollar payment from the Government of Malaysia with respect to 1MDB and he is assumed to have been one of the key facilitators of the friendly relationship between the two politicians, who played golf in Hawaii during the Malaysian flooding disaster at the start of the year.
DuSable Capital Management focuses on energy support services and over the past two years it has declared a somewhat ill-defined role in 1MDB’s latest energy project – a planned solar power plant in Kedah (which we have noted is budgeted at three times the amount of similar projects elsewhere).
In public depositions the company has stated “one aspect of DuSable’s activities will be to communicate with US Government Officials” [23.04.14] and also “to encourage the US Government to provide non-financial support for the [1MDB Solar Power] project” [26.09.13].
Given there is no obvious need for 1MDB to require any US government advocacy to support the construction of a field of power generating solar panels in Kedah, the inevitable assumption is that Frank White Jr had agreed as part of his deal with 1MDB to promote its stated boss “the Government of Malaysia” with his own political boss Barack Obama.
For example by arranging golf between Najib and the President.
Did 1MDB money flow into fixing this glorious moment for Najib?
Did 1MDB money flow into fixing this glorious moment for Najib?
Nevertheless, in a written answer to a Parliamentary question, Najib has now categorically denied that there had been any agreement between DuSable and 1MDB WHATSOEVER!
“1MDB has never signed any sort of agreement with DuSable Capital Management LLC in Kedah.” [Parliamentary reply by Najib]
The MP who asked the question, PKR’s Wong Chen, has expressed considerable surprise as a result:
“For this Parliamentary session, I put in a question for an update on the 1MDB solar power project in Kedah with DuSable Capital Management LLC (DuSable). The project was reported by The Star on 23rd April 2014.
Yesterday, I received an official Parliamentary reply from the Minister of Finance, YAB Najib Razak that 1MDB has not signed any joint venture agreement with DuSable in Kedah.
We have been told that the Prime Minister’s golfing buddy, President Obama will be visiting Malaysia again this November.
The co-founder of DuSable is Frank White Junior. He has been described by Bloomberg as “President Obama’s top individual fundraiser, a former technology executive who collected millions of dollars for the Obama’s election campaigns.
So, is Najib’s company calling Mr Obama’s aide a liar?
After all, anyone who cares to check can look up the filings made by DuSable, because the United States’ transparency laws demand that all companies register their foreign dealings under the so-called FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act).
Frank White Jr made a number of depositions about his deal with 1MDB, beginning in 2013 when the plan to build the solar station was announced.
“DuSable has engaged in a partnership with 1Malaysia Development Berhad to develop, finance and construct a 50 MWac solar project….”  the latest 2014 filing explains (second document below):
Submission to FARA by DuSable on 26th Sept 2013
Submission to FARA by DuSable on 26th Sept 2013
DuSable amended the declaration the following year to say that the relationship would not involve any investment in the company by 1MDB, as had been stated previously.
Presumably the publicity surrounding the news that 1MDB would be investing in DuSable had been considered unconstructive:
1MDB will no longer be an investor in DuSable, but the arrangement remains in place - 2014
1MDB will no longer be an investor in DuSable, but the arrangement remains in place – 2014
What all this documentation makes clear is that DuSable certainly had an arrangement of some sort with 1MDB.

Half a Million Dollars for Frank!

What’s more, the public declarations show exactly how much money DuSable was getting “from the Government of Malaysia” for a “joint venture partnership reimbursement for solar investment project in Malaysia” – according to DuSable US$506,079:
Over half a million dollars!
Over half a million dollars!
Nice money for Frank White Jr for his activities, which included communicating with US Government Officials to provide that non-financial support. He puts in the details in a separate form, included are Frank and his co-director’s hefty travel expenses to KL showing the final total paid by 1MDB to DuSable was US$524,394.10:
Could the PM explain these payments in the absence of an arrangement?
Could the PM explain these payments in the absence of an arrangement?
But, with such talk of joint ventures and partnerships, how is that Najib has stated there has been “no arrangement whatsoever”?  Does he mean that Frank White Jr, who is Mr Obama’s close and trusted confidante, is lying?!
Wong Chen has understandably now challenged Najib to straighten things out with the US Governement:
“If there is no partnership whatsoever between DuSable and 1MDB, will the Minister of Finance file a formal complaint to the US State Department of Justice against DuSable?” he asked yesterday.
Perhaps Najib should sort this little problem before Mr Obama jets in in a couple of weeks?

Do read the articles above not once but a couple of times.  Today many people do not really understand what they read.  So reading a couple of times is helpful.
Today at my age, I too need to read couple of times to understand why many people especially the Malays are really, really lazy and stupid.
Today we live in a world where news travel faster than our thoughts.
Today more and more people can only think of money.
True without money we cannot survive.  But is it necessary to overlook our moral responsibility and say okay what, no-one die or hurt because of what I do or sell. But how do you know?
Someone I know has a business selling bottled drinking water.  His company sells five different brand and all the water is from one source - his kitchen tap. My friend went into this business because there was a great demand for clean drinking water thanks to Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd who constantly supply brownish water to us. Then we also have the no water period because of political games played by Syabas and others.
Even though water is free, Government and politicians have the power to bully us into paying for their so-called services.
My friend's company makes million yearly selling tap water because in Malaysia there is no regulation and laws over what can or cannot be sold.  Meaning a person can sell drinking water taken from tap, filter, well or drain.  Everything is called Mineral Water.  And most people do not bother to read as long as it is cheap.  This is where most people are into all kinds of ailments today.
Second in point is Alkaline Water which many Malay executives, Datuk, Datin, Tan Sri are involved. There is even a newly appointed Deputy of a GLC company selling the machine worth RM12,000 every Sat and Sun going from 1 kampung to another.  Why kampung?  Because in Malay Business and where fast money are concern, the Malays simply love it.  Malays in Kampung are the best customer. They get hooked and conned easily.
As far as I can remember for three generations my family has been drinking dead water.  Dead water means boiled water. And for three generations my family members never have ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer etc and our youth, meaning we do not look our age nor do we get sick easily. Even though we do consume outside food and drinks, our body can counter most diseases that are found in our beautiful dirty eateries. But in every family there must be one who do not follow our way and that is my husband.  He loves to eat and drink outside all the time and best of all his friends and relatives will give him Air Zam Zam and Alkaline water to drink.  So every month he will come home bringing these but luckily none of us take more than a sip.  And the one who is constantly suffering from this and that sickness will be him.  What I want to say is this that most illness are created within our body from what we drink that was channeled into our blood system.

The other story I want to mention is that one of my husband's friend is selling Alkaline machine like hot cake but she herself does not own one.  Reason being her brother died of cancer after drinking alkaline water for six months.  This lady is aware of the pros and cons of the machine but because of the big commission she cast aside her moral responsibility. To her so what if the person dies because of the machine she is selling since it is a one time off sale. Meaning there is no after service, also knowing how stupid most Malays are there is no chance of anyone suing her.  Her ambition is to be a millionaire selling alkaline machine alone.

Vapes is also a best seller in Malaysia.  Anyone who is into this business understand how easy one can make money from this.  Last year a customer ordered 7 different types of essence from me.  Since he was not into fishing or baking I asked him what he was going to do with so many litre of different essence.  Then he pulled out a set of Vape and explain that it was the latest trend among the Malays and Gen Y. Smoking today is no longer about showing off their maturity with a cigarette in between their fingers but different types of vape to show off their ego.  Most smokers like to mix flavoured essence with ganja to get high and girls simply love it to have better sex with their partners. My customer operates from his Desa Pandan low cost flat but he has six BMW stored in a warehouse nearby. So imagine the income he gets just by selling vapes and essences.

For the past one week I have been talking to some Malay graduates.  They were given Mara Scholarship to study for their degree but after graduation they are not working.
This is one very sad example.

Me:      Why are you not working?
Lin:      No job.
Me:      Did you apply for a job.
Lin:      No.
Me:      Why?
Lin:      No-body give job.
Me:      You have to apply for jobs in order to get a job.
Lin:      Mara give scholarship so Mara must give job.
Me:      So how long you going to wait for Mara to give job.
Lin:      When they call me.
Me:      Come I help you find a job.
Lin:      Tak payah.
Me:      Why?  You can speak English better than most people and you got a Degree.
Lin:       Malas.  Nak rest.
Me:       But you have been resting for over a year.
Lin.       Smile.
Me:       Come, I take you to listen to some talk and see whether you are interested.
Lin:       I cannot talk.
Grandparents:       Never mind she just graduated.  Later if cannot get a job we will find a husband for her.

Cissie and the sultan: composite image

It is 75 years since Cissie Hill, the lover of one of the word's richest men, was killed in a German air raid. At the time of her death the dancer's relationship with the Sultan of Johor was one of the world's most scrutinised romances. But who were they and what was it about their story that captivated so many?
It was an affair that scandalised polite society and set tongues wagging across the world. She was a British showgirl of humble origins, while he was a foreign ruler born to great privilege and unimaginable wealth.
The love affair between Lydia Cecilia "Cissie" Hill and the Sultan of Johor, which had begun in the luxury of the Grosvenor House hotel in London in the 1930s, continued to cause a sensation even after the outbreak of World War Two.
It was all to end beneath the rubble of a building that suffered a direct hit from the Luftwaffe while 27-year-old Cissie was out shopping in Canterbury, in October 1940.
She was identified by the exquisite jewellery she was wearing, given to her by the sultan.
Cissie had left her home town of Herne Bay in Kent for the West End in 1934, landing a prestigious cabaret job at the Grosvenor House.

Historian Emma Muscat explained: "They didn't just take any old dancer; you would have to be excellent at singing, acting and dancing."
It was there that Cissie first caught the eye of Ibrahim, Sultan of Johor, a "fabulously wealthy" Malay ruler in his 60s, who was staying at the hotel.
Born in 1873, the sultan was an Anglophile who continued his father's friendly relationship with the British government.
Author Colin Smith said the tall Eurasian sultan was "one of the richest men in the world", having made money selling rubber to the car industry.
He said: "When he came to power, he was only 22 and a spoiled, headstrong boy. His main passions were tiger shooting, horse racing and women. He began to take sexual safaris."
And it was on one of these world tours that he became smitten with the showgirl. But there was a problem - he was still married.

As a Muslim he could have had as many as four wives at any one time, according to Dr Mulaika Hijjas from SOAS, University of London.
"He had a number of different wives from a number of different backgrounds, including one, Helen Bartholomew, who was born in Glasgow.
"The sultan was married six times in all but I don't think he filled up the whole complement, though - as some of his wives died and some were divorced."
The sultan kept his affair hidden from his wife but showered Cissie with expensive gifts, including valuable jewellery and a large Art Deco house with sea views in Herne Bay, called Mayfair Court.
Although the two tried hard to keep their affair quiet, the romance was thrust into the public eye after a burglary in which £5,000 worth of jewels - worth some £290,000 today - were stolen from Mayfair Court.

A number of items bore the sultan's initials and the relationship was exposed, causing a media sensation.
Emma Muscat explained: "The burglary takes the relationship from something that has operated under the radar and now it is in the public forum.
"In modern parlance we would say it has gone viral."
The world's press became fixated on the relationship, with photographers and reporters following the pair everywhere.
In 1938, Cissie was pictured wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring, but despite "rumours of an engagement no announcement was ever made", the New York Times said in 1940.
Ms Muscat said: "This is where the chain of tragic events starts to unravel. The sultan is under immense political pressure from the British government - they are not happy about the relationship.
"He is also under pressure from Johor. It's not good."

Colin Smith said the British community in Malaysia and Singapore was "outraged".
"They had put up with his marriage to Helen Wilson in 1930, who was a widow some 16 years his junior, but when he began his affair with Cissie, who the Daily Express described as a platinum-haired ex-glamour girl, they began to ostracise him, and turn down his invitations to official functions.
"At first he retaliated by firing all his British employees, then he planted shrubs on the golf course [used by the British] but in the end he gave in and broke off the engagement.
"But he very obviously adored her."
But in October 1940, disaster struck while Cissie was on a shopping trip to Canterbury when German bombers targeted the city.

Image captionThe sultan surprised many when he appeared to move on very quickly after Cissie's death
Ms Muscat said Cissie was killed instantly. "The only way that her body could be identified was by the jewellery she was wearing that the sultan had given her.
"And it was the sultan and Cissie's mother that identified the body," she said.
After Cissie's death, the heartbroken sultan built a tomb to her on a hill above Herne Bay. He would later say that it was his one great grief that they never married.
But less than a month after her death, the sultan married a Romanian woman called Marcella Mendl.
Questioned by the Daily Mirror at the time about his sudden marriage, he said: "It is is for the future that I want to live. Let's not refer to anything else."
The sultan died aged 85 on 8 May 1959 in a suite at the Grosvenor House hotel.
Time Magazine said he had "passed his last years quietly, watching TV, going to the theatre, enjoying the company of his sixth wife, Sultana Marcella, and his adored eight-year-old daughter, Princess Meriam".

90% of the Doctorates held by Malays is not worth the toilet paper on which it is printed because it was all produced by some internet degree mill for a fee andworse still is when you hold them to a discussion or debate , the thoughts that emanate from the area between their ears is so embarrassing you want to run away and jump off a cliff but yet they proudly parade their Doctorates with pride “
90% of the Malay wealth is not from the fruits of their labour as great entrepreneurs , like the Chinese , but rather the hand-outs of their political patronage and cronyism and there is nothing to be proud of the huge mansions and expensive cars and life-style , because they are nothing but the produce of utter corruption at stealing the wealth of the people’s blood , sweat and tears , and yet , without shame their spouses and children flaunt it like they earned all these through intelligence and hard-work . Where is the self pride ?

Before Malaysians grant Prime Minister Najib’s request for a mandate in the coming election, we should examine his performance during the past four years. It has been mediocre, satiated with slogans, and drifting amidst an abundance of acronyms.

If Malaysians are satisfied with KPI and PEMANDU, or One Malaysia This and Two Malaysia That, then expect more of the same, this time with ever incredulous inanity and flatulent fatuousness. Najib has not demonstrated any ability or inclination to clean up his administrative house. An early indication of his second term performance is this. Thus far no cabinet minister has voluntarily withdrawn from being an electoral candidate. As Najib will not drop them, if they win they will end up in his cabinet again. Nothing would have changed.
A wisecrack definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result. That is true only if you let the same cast of incompetent characters carry out the task after they have clearly and repeatedly demonstrated their inability to do so.
Pick others more competent and diligent, and the result may well surprise you. It would be far from insanity. The best advice a science teacher could give a student who repeatedly fails to perform an experiment is to suggest that he pursues music instead, where “practice, practice, practice!” (doing the same thing over and over) may take him to Carnegie Hall.
Likewise, the kindest gesture to Najib after he has clearly demonstrated his inability to lead would be for Malaysians to force him into another line of work, by not voting him and his party in.

After over half of century in power, what has UMNO, a party that claims to champion Malays, achieved? Malays today are even more morally corrupt, deeply polarized, and economically disadvantaged than ever before. Those are not my observations. I am merely summarizing what Mamak, a man who led the country and UMNO for over two decades, said. Take any social indicator – rate of incarceration, drug abuse, families headed by single mothers – and our community is over represented.
Our educational and economic achievements are nothing to be proud of; they are an embarrassment. Yet UMNO Supreme Council members parade their ‘doctorates’ from degree mills as genuine intellectual achievements. The sorry part is that their colleagues believe them! Spouses and families of ministers brag that their luxurious condominiums are the fruits of their entrepreneurial flair where others see those as reflecting the corruption and cronyism of the system.
Current UMNO leaders are like that inept science student; it is time to force them to pursue other lines of work, anything other than leading us. Voters must be like the strict teacher; flunk the student who repeatedly fails to perform his assigned task. Letting him continue would not do that individual any service; it would only be detrimental to the rest of the class. Voters must flunk these corrupt and incompetent UMNO leaders by voting them out.

This does not mean that UMNO is a lost cause; nothing is. Even the most unseaworthy sloop could through imaginative and skilful craftsmanship be brought up to Bristol condition. The operative phrase or caveat is “imaginative and skilful craftsmanship.” Is Najib imaginative and skilful? I never underestimate the ability of an individual to learn or change.

The diminutive, uninspiring and uncharismatic Deng Xiaoping was well in his 70s when he assumed power. He then took his giant nation in a radically different and far better direction. Unlike Deng, Najib is far from being diminutive physically, but he exceeds Deng in being uninspiring and uncharismatic.

Again unlike Deng whose path to power was littered with the carcasses of personal and political tragedies (his son was paralyzed by Red Guard goons and Deng was once paraded in a dunce cap on the streets of Beijing ), Najib’s ascend to the top was well paved – by others. Deng was tempered by life’s bitter lessons; Najib’s the beneficiary of its many blessings.
If Najib considers that a handicap and an excuse for his under performance, then he should look up to another transformative leader of modern times, Franklin D Roosevelt, for inspiration. Roosevelt , whose name means a field of roses in Dutch, was born into privilege. Yet he uplifted the lives of Americans especially the poor through his New Deal initiatives. His progressive redistributionist policies earned him the sobriquet, “traitor to his class.”

Najib’s name is equally rosy; it means wise, intelligent, or high birth in Arabic. Like Roosevelt , Najib was also born into privilege though not on the same scale as FDR or today. Corruption and cronyism were not yet the norms when Razak Hussein was Prime Minister.

Going back to Deng, Najib too spent his formative years as a young man abroad, in Britain , to Deng’s Europe . When Deng left, his father asked him what he hoped to learn. Deng replied, “To learn knowledge and the truth from the West in order to save China .” I do not know whether Najib had a similar conversation with his father, but one thing I do know. Razak Hussein sent all his children abroad to escape the very Malaysian system of education he was championing! Hypocrisy is a good word to describe such a stance. That is one trait Najib inherits from his father.
I risk flattering Najib by mentioning him in the same sentence with Deng and FDR. My doing so merely reflects a longing on my part for a leader who could inspire us. Najib could initiate change now to give us a hint that he is indeed capable of being a “transformative leader” as he so frequently bragged, and not be content with merely mouthing slogans. He could announce his “shadow” cabinet should Barisan be returned to power. Better yet, revamp his cabinet now and pick his new team to go into the election so citizens could have a reason to vote for Barisan and not merely against Pakatan.

Malaysians do not expect miracles or demand a super team, merely capable and honest ministers. It is not a tall order. Begin by getting rid of those stale politicians in his cabinet. If they haven’t yet made their mark, they are unlikely to do so in the next few years. Characters like Nazri, Rais and Hishamuddin are like durians that have remained unsold for far too long. They are tak laku (unsellable), not even good for making tompoyak. All they do is stink the place up and lower the value of what few remaining good durians Najib has. Nor are his junior ministers, the next tier of leaders, any better, as exemplified by the recent idiotic utterances of one Dr. Mashitah. She is supposedly better educated, sporting a doctorate of some sort. I could add a few more names including that of Muhyyiddin, but that would only be divisive. After all he has as much claim and legitimacy to the top post as Najib. Instead why not join forces and together pick the new dream team. While he is at it, Najib should also pick a new Attorney General and anti-corruption chief.

If Najib were to name individuals with impeccable credentials and professionalism to those two offices, then those old tak laku durians he dropped from his cabinet would not dare create trouble for him. Najib’s address to the UMNO General Assembly later this month will reveal whether he is content with another session of sloganeering or serious about transforming his party and country. The greater significance is this. By indulging in the former and naming the same old nincompoops to his cabinet and top positions, Najib soils the reputation of our community. It gives the impression that the Nazris, Raises, Mashitahs and Hishamuddins represent the best our race is capable of producing or that we are bereft of talents. The shame reflects on all of us.

May Allah have mercy on the Malays.
